About Me

I am from Jamaica and have been caregiving for almost 20 years. I love caregiving because I grew up with my grandparents and was involved in their aging process. I helped prepare meals and feed them and truly enjoyed listening to my grandmother's stories and experiences. Being with my grandparents inspired me to care for the elderly. For example, one of my clients lived to age 106 and she made me laugh each day. She was such a nice person and was in an assisted living facility. I helped with with daily living tasks and made sure she looked her best. She loved going to the facility's nail and hair salon on a weekly basis, and it was my pleasure to see her interact with the residents of the facility, and "own" the dining room as the elder stateswoman. She like to joke with me that she ate whatever she wanted and did whatever she wanted, which is why she lived to age 106. My other clients' family members say I smile a lot, and see me as a pleasure to have around. I am always pleasant and talkative with my clients, and they say they always see me in a happy, positive mood. I also had a client who was on hospice care and who thanked me sincerely. It was difficult but we bonded over the experience. I am gentle, patient, kind, and trustworthy. I put my heart and soul into caring for other people. I go above and beyond for my clients and it is a privilege to care for them. When I am not working, I go to the gym and go for walks, as well as go the movies and shopping. I love cooking and gardening, and one of my other favorite places is the garden center of the local home improvement store. I am avid reader and write poetry and my memoirs.

Recommendations

We hired Karen to care for my father who had Alzheimer's. Karen worked 12 hours a day, 3 to 4 days a week, from January 2017 until my father's passing in September 2019. If I had to go out of town, Karen would step in and serve as a live-in caregiver. In the time Karen was with my father, it was truly a pleasure. Karen took a tough situation and addressed it with kindness, compassion, and skill. She followed my father's care plan, made great suggestions, and established a positive connection with my father. Karen provided hands-on care, reminded my father about his medication, and went to doctor appointments with him. Karen was reliable and trustworthy, and went above and beyond to make sure my father was safe and comfortable. I had 100 percent confidence in Karen's caregiving skills, and was very comfortable when I was out of town, knowing my father was in good hands. I would absolutely recommend Karen as a private caregiver and would hire her again if another family member of mine needed care.

In 2000, my father was starting to show signs of dementia. We lived in a two-family home, but the rest of the family was out most of the day so we hired Karen to be with him to keep him company and keep him safe. She was his primary caregiver for more than a decade until his death in 2011. Karen was mature and responsible. She knew him well, and understood him, and as his dementia worsened, was able to keep him calm when he got agitated. She gave more as more was needed. Karen's responsibilities included medication reminders, meal preparation, help with showering and dressing, laundry and light housekeeping. I saw Karen every day and observed the caring and compassionate way she was with dad. She was keenly observant and communicated well with me. I am confident in recommending Karen as an excellent caregiver.
