About Me

I was born Ghana and taking care of the elderly is an experience that most Africans are trained to do. We grow up with our parents and grandparents living with us and we help them with everything. I took care of and catered to my grandparents, and caregiving is part of who I am. When I came to the United States, I realized that the caregiving experience that I had at home was actually a job here. As soon as I started working, it confirmed how much I love caregiving. I'm committed to my work. My clients love me and appreciate me because I do my best. I was with one client for more than six years and became part of his family. I learned so much about medications and hospice care while I was caring for him. Even after his death, I continued to work for his family. I humble myself when I give care. It gives me experience in how to relate to people. I have learned how to be patient, how to interpret what they need, and how to meet those needs. I love being outside and I enjoy taking care of plants and reading.

Recommendations

My brother had a challenged mental capacity from birth and it was even more difficult when he developed early onset dementia in his early 60s. In August 2012, Charles came to live with him in a cottage next door to our family home, and he and my brother were inseparable for six years until my brother's death. I saw Charles at least once a week, and think he is a great guy. He is honest, hardworking, and true. He was always prepared and attentive, and very kind. When Charles started, he served as a companion, though his responsibilities changed as my brother's dementia worsened. By the end, he was doing everything for my brother. Charles seemed to be a good cook, and I know he cooked healthy foods. He interacted appropriately with the nurses and doctors who worked with my brother. I can't even begin to quantify the amount of patience that Charles has. We have a large family, and Charles fit in well. At the same time, he was respectful about our privacy and private times. I know that Charles loved my brother and my brother loved Charles. If I were to be sick, I would want Charles to take care of me.
