About Me

I am from Jamaica and have been a caregiver since the late 90s. I became a caregiver because I am very passionate about older people. I observed my mother caring for elderly neighbors who needed her help and I learned through observation, and noticed how confident everyone was with my mother's skills. I became inspired to care for the elderly when I arrived in this country. Since then, I have cared for both male and female clients with dementia, as well as physically challenged clients. I can provide total hands-on care for my clients, and do light housekeeping, remind them of medications, and prepare meals. I also read with my clients, take them outside in the community, and help carry over their physical therapy exercises at home whenneeded. My clients describe me as very jovial, pleasant, reliable. I am very honest, very religious, and love to help. For example, I had a client who wasn't very verbal and wasn't doing well when I left my shift. I prayed for her, and when I reported back to her home, my client actually spoke to me and said, "Hi there! How are you? Please change the channel." We engaged in a brief conversation, and it felt so good, considering she would respond with one-word answers in the past. The experience touched my heart, and it was a privilege to witness that beautiful moment. I truly love my clients like they are my own family members, and it is an honor to see their conditions improve. Knowing that I helped them and made them feel better keeps me motivated and challenges me to bring my best each and every day to my client. When I'm not working, I like to sew and am very involved in my church. I cook for the elderly and homebound, and it is a joy to share my food with them. I love reading the Bible and going bicycle riding on nice days.

Muriel was a caregiver for my mother from the fall of 2017 until March 2020. She came in two days a week for five hours each day. Mom was 88 years old when Muriel started. Mom has serious balance issues and is a high fall risk. Muriel helped with bathing and dressing, prepared breakfast and lunch, and helped her in and out of the stair chair. Muriel is a lovely person, and a mature woman who doesn't need to be told what do. She was always busy, and if she wasn't tending to Mom, she had a broom in her hand. My mother is a pretty private person and Muriel was really respectful of mom. She knew how to keep Mom safe without smothering her. Muriel was reliable and trustworthy. She impressed me when she showed up at my father's funeral service shortly after she started working, and I had to talk her out of driving three hours to come to the burial. She is sweet and kind, and is the kind of person who knows that in giving, she is receiving. Mom needs a live-in caregiver now, and unfortunately, Muriel was not available to provide that at that time. I have no hesitation in recommending her as a caregiver.

Muriel was the first aide I hired in November 2015 when I realized that my dad needed more care than I could provide, and she was with him when he died in September 2017. She saw dad through lung cancer and worsening dementia, led a staff of 3-4 other caregivers, and was a caring, reliable, and trustworthy caregiver for him. At the time, I lived about an hour away from dad, so I needed someone I trusted to be there. Though she didn't work every shift, Muriel made sure that the team showed up, and would fill in when necessary. In the beginning, she reminded dad to take his meds, did grocery shopping and laundry, and cooked for him. As he got sicker, she helped with toileting, bathing, and dressing. She kept him active when that was possible, and kept him company all the time. Dad was confined to his bed for the last 11 months of his life, and he never had a bed sore. I attribute that to Muriel's excellent oversight. One time early on, before dad needed a caregiver in the home at all times, I could see from the cameras that dad had fallen. I called Muriel and she rushed over there, arriving in time to let the EMTs into the house. That's just one example of her going the extra mile for our family. I highly recommend Muriel and will continue to recommend her to my friends and family in need of an excellent caregiver.

Muriel took care of my mother for about a year in 2005 and then when my brother was dying from lymphoma, I called her again to take care of him for the last few months of his life. My mom was not the easiest patient but Muriel never had a problem dealing with her. Muriel sat with her for hours while she was in the hospital and then cared for her at home during the day while I was at work. She took good care of both of them and I would certainly call her if I needed help for myself.
