About Me

I was born and raised in Jamaica. Back in Jamaica, I was in nursing school for 2 years and later moved to the United States in 1990. I became a caregiver in 1995. When I arrived in the United States, I wanted to become a nurse since I couldn’t finish nursing school back at home. Instead, I became a waitress and then my mother encouraged me to pursue a career in health care. My mother, who is also a caregiver, encouraged me to do this line of work because of my kindness and patience, and how I interact with people. I love everything about this job, I like to help people, and I feel good when they say "thank you" whenever I am able to provide a positive result. Also, I learn a lot from my clients, because they are knowledgeable and well-traveled. I love to cook for clients. I can manage and take them to their appointments. I make sure they are safe at all times and also ensure they are following any recommendations made by their medical providers, either medications or exercise. I am a very friendly and fun-loving person to be around. I love to cook and love to dance, especially zumba.

Recommendations

Sandra worked with my mother as a home health aide from 2009-2013. She was responsible for many areas of mom's care including personal care, assistance with dressing, shopping, cooking, management of multiple medications, doctor's appointments, and supervision of her needs at the senior center. Her intelligence and concern had been at the forefront of her care and I had been able to rely on her unconditionally. I was always aware that Sandra was thinking about every aspect of mom's care and communicated with me concerning any health issues around reports from doctors and other relevant issues. Sandra is completely reliable and always made sure that mom had coverage whether that meant coordinating with other care workers for mom or during emergencies. Not only was she the primary caregiver, but she coordinated the team of four home health aides. Sandra has an excellent understanding of the needs of the elderly and specifically understood my mother and her needs as she became less able to care for herself and developed dementia. I would recommend Sandra with no reservations.

Sandra was employed by my family as a caregiver for a period of approximately 11 years, ending when our family moved my parents to our house in South Carolina in April 2006. Initially, Sandra's duties involved care for Bernice, my mother, who suffered from Parkinson's disease. Bernice was unable to walk, and often unable to speak or feed herself, and incontinent. She required 24-hour attention. Beginning about 1998, my father, Robert, began to suffer the effects of open-heart surgery and a failed hip replacement surgery, including inability to walk, loss of memory, speech impairment, gradually increasing dementia, and incontinence. Needless to say, at that time the duties of the caregivers increased substantially. In addition, none of my family was living nearby, meaning that Sandra, who worked most days, was essentially responsible for doctor visits, preparing meals, meds, and generally running the household, including scheduling the other caregivers. During this period, Sandra's performance was outstanding. We have no reservations in recommending Sandra, who is honest, patient, hard-working, and always punctual. In addition, she is intelligent and unassuming, and takes responsibility without complaint under the most difficult circumstances. She gets the job done.
